The municipality of Muonio is part of the regional plan of Fell Lapland. Ylläs, Jerisjärvi-Äkäsjärvi and Olos-Särkijärvi-Torassieppi partial general plans are valid in the municipal area. Zoning plans have been drawn up, e.g. for the city center, Olos, Särkijärvi and Tiurajärvi area and several detailed shore plans for different parts of the municipality.

The municipal government acts as a planning authority.
